Serving Local and Marginalized Communities
How, as retreat centers, do we meet the needs of our communities? As a collective, we hold questions of justice and equity as it is embedded in all of our work. This work is not completed in one community call, and, in this recording, we start to travel down the road about:
the difference and complexity of solidarity versus charity;
how marginalized communities are represented in our leadership, staffing, and retreatants;
and the non-profit industrial complex.
An insight from this call was recognizing that working with local and marginalized populations should be authentically and intentionally built through relationships and trust. Accessibility and active listening to needs are vital.
Working in small breakout groups, we discussed key groups that retreat centers are working with and aspiring to work with. In the large group discussion afterward we shared about how to hold these questions moving forward.
