Interrupting Harmful Patterns: A Racial Healing Workshop for White People

Call begins at 1:30pm Eastern Daylight Time (EDT)

Facilitators: Robin DiAngelo and Marissa Metelica of the Racial Healing Initiative team

Topic: Interrupting Harmful Patterns: A Racial Healing Workshop for White People

If we understand racism as systemic, we understand that no one is untouched by or outside of racism. This understanding allows us to conceptualize racism as an active continuum we are all on, rather than as an either / or binary. For those of us who are white and not in denial about systemic racism, it is easy to see what is on the extreme end of that continuum. But it is much harder for many of us to see what is on the closer end – what I term “nice racism.” This session will address why it is progressive white people who can cause the most daily harm across race, and identify many common white racial patterns that perpetuate racial harm. We will engage in a series of reflection questions and an assessment tool of the skills and perspectives that can counter “nice” racism.

Dr. Robin DiAngelo is an affiliate associate professor of education at the University of Washington. She has been a consultant, educator, and facilitator on issues of racial and social justice for more than 25 years.
