Emerging Topics: Fundraising and Programming

For this week’s call, we offered participants 4 emergent topics, to be explored in small groups for 45 minutes:

  • Fundraising, Donors, and Revenue

  • Boards and Governance

  • Management and Supervision

  • Programming and Presenters

We asked participants to share their current priorities in these discussion topics, and chose Fundraising and Programming as our topics of the day. Some highlights from our notes are collected below.

Click the video above to watch the last 10 minutes of our large group conversation.

Fundraising, Donors, and Revenue

  • Relationships: Become sponsored by another entity

  • Relationships: Become blended with business enterprises

  • Start with a program, and find the right grant?

  • Don’t want mission drift for funders

  • Writing grants for capacity building funding

  • If you come out of it with data, it’s a successful project

  • You’re in a relationship role, hearing “no” is a great opportunity

  • Look at local, regional, and national, what can be used for seed/pilot grants

  • Narrow your search focus to find things that match interest and needs

  • How do you continue this funding?

  • We have the data and story telling to seek other grants

  • Generating new work, letting go of old

  • Balancing capacity and priority

  • What are you telling as your story?

  • Start with the why - Simon Sinek

  • Naming tensions: Do we seek grant funding for new ideas, or continue existing programs that already have data?

  • Naming tensions: What do we hold on to, what do we let go of in terms of physical program designs that were our mainstays pre-COVID?

Programming and Presenters

  • Program collaboration across retreat centers

  • Interest in creating a collaboration hub at RCC with programming as a focus

  • Communities of empowerment

  • Excitement about a variety of ways for collaboration

  • Learn from the lessons of being virtual, become stronger
